How to Create Project Name

Purpose of a Project Name

The project name is the primary identifier of a project in Global Project Tracker. A clear, standardized name helps users quickly understand what the project is, where it is located, and how to search or filter it later.

A good project name should be:

  • Descriptive, not generic

  • Consistent across similar projects

  • Easy to understand without opening the full project record

Standard Project Naming Format

Use this structure in most cases:

Project Type / Facility Name – Location (City, State, Country)

Example

  • Data Center Development – Hyderabad, Telangana, India

  • Residential Apartment Complex – Whitefield, Bengaluru, India

  • Solar Power Plant – Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India

This format ensures uniformity across the database and improves discoverability.

Step-by-Step: Creating a Project Name

Step 1: Identify the Project Type

Start with what the project actually is.

Examples:

  • Data Center

  • Hospital

  • Residential Tower

  • Highway Expansion

  • Manufacturing Plant

  • Warehouse Facility

Avoid vague terms like “Construction Project” or “Development Work”.

Step 2: Add the Official Facility or Project Name (If Available)

If the project has an officially announced name, include it.

Examples:

  • ABC Tech Park – IT Campus

  • GreenField Pharma Manufacturing Unit

If no official name exists, stick to a clear descriptive name based on usage or asset type.

Step 3: Add the Location

Always include location details in this order:

  • City

  • State

  • Country

This is critical because many projects share similar names.

Correct:

  • Logistics Park Development – Chakan, Maharashtra, India

Incorrect:

  • Logistics Park Development

Step 4: Keep It Clean and Consistent

Follow these rules:

  • Use title case (capitalize key words)

  • Do not include project cost, phase numbers, or stage details in the name

  • Avoid abbreviations unless they are widely recognized (e.g., SEZ, IT Park)

  • Do not add internal notes or assumptions

Naming Examples by Sector

Infrastructure

  • Highway Expansion Project – NH-48, Gujarat, India

  • Metro Rail Corridor – Phase 2, Pune, Maharashtra, India

Energy

  • Wind Power Project – Kutch, Gujarat, India

  • Solar PV Plant – Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, India

Real Estate

  • Luxury Residential Towers – Gachibowli, Hyderabad, India

  • Commercial Office Complex – BKC, Mumbai, India

Industrial

  • Steel Manufacturing Plant – Kalinganagar, Odisha, India

  • Food Processing Facility – Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, India

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using internal or temporary names like “Client Project 1”

  • Adding speculative details that are not confirmed

  • Writing overly long names with too much information

  • Skipping location details

Quick Checklist Before Saving

Before finalizing the project name, ask:

  • Can someone understand what this project is in one glance?

  • Is the location clearly mentioned?

  • Does this follow the standard format used across the platform?

If the answer is yes to all three, the project name is good to go.
